  MULTIFAMILY RESIDENTIAL

Seabury Housing New Haven, Connecticut

A product of the dynamic public housing boom in the 1980’s, this facility was one of the first to embrace mixed-use occupancy.  Typically, elderly residences had been constructed apart from the commotion of family units.  Family projects had come to be considered undesirable neighbors and a poor investment for private developers.

Enter the Seabury Housing Corporation, organized by members of the Episcopal Church to provide an opportunity for the elderly and families of the community to live together harmoniously in an urban setting.  Architect William F. Pedersen was challenged to provide a non-instutional setting that matched the scale of the neighborhood and provided lifestyle living opportunities for the residents parallel to the realities of life.
